What is a dye lot in fabric? Why does it matter for wholesale garment orders?

A dye lot is a batch of fabric dyed together in one production run. Even when two batches use the same dye formula, slight variations in temperature, water quality, and dye uptake result in subtle colour differences between lots — these are called "dye lot variations".

Why dye lots matter for wholesale buyers:

  • If your garment order is split across two dye lots of the same colour fabric, pieces from different lots may show slight colour variation — visible when garments are displayed together
  • Reorders of the same design months later may come in a different dye lot — the colour may be noticeably different from the original order
  • Cut pieces (separate top, bottom, and dupatta of a suit) from different dye lots will not match exactly

How to manage dye lot risk:

  • Ask suppliers whether a reorder will be from the same dye lot as the original order
  • For garment sets (top + bottom that must match), insist that all components come from the same dye lot
  • Accept that slight dye lot variation is normal — a reason for discount, not rejection, unless variation is extreme
